Athlete of the Year 2018 - nomination

2018 was a very exciting year for the sport of ultrarunning. Several championships took place starting with Trail World Championship in Penyagolosa, Spain, followed shortly by the European 24H Championship in Timisoara, Romania, then 100 km World Championship in Sveti Martin na Muri, Croatia and finally Asia & Oceania 24H Championship
in Taipei, Taiwan. We witnessed outstanding performances during those races.   
 

As in previous years we are continuing with the Athletes of the Year process. We are pleased to provide the list of automatic qualifiers based on podium finishers in Major IAU Competitions and WBPs.

List of automatic qualifiers

Women (alphabetic order):

  • NELE ALDERBAERENS (GER) – 2nd place at 2018 IAU 100 km World Championship
  • Patrycja Bereznowska (POL) – 1st place at 2018 IAU 24H European Championship
  • Laia Canes (ESP) - 2nd place at 2018 IAU Trail World Championship
  • Ragna Debats (NED) - 1st place at 2018 IAU Trail World Championship
  • MAI FUJISAWA (JPN) – 3rd place at 2018 IAU 100 km World Championship
  • Camille Herron* (USA) – 100 miles WBP (12:42:40) at Tunnel Hill race
  • TIA JONES (AUS) - 2nd place at 2018 IAU 24H Asia & Oceania Championship
  • AIKO KANEMATSU (JPN) - 3rd place at 2018 IAU 24H Asia & Oceania Championship
  • YURI MATSUMOTO (JPN) - 1st place at 2018 IAU 24H Asia & Oceania Championship
  • Claire Mougel (FRA) – 3rd place at 2018 IAU Trail World Championship
  • NIKOLINA ŠUSTIĆ (CRO) – 1st place at 2018 IAU 100 km World Championship
  • Małgorzata Pazda-Pozorska (POL) – 3rd place at 2018 IAU 24H European Championship
  • Stine Rex (DEN) – 2nd place at 2018 IAU 24H European Championship

  • GYOBA TAKEHIKO (JPN) – 2nd place at 2018 IAU 100 km World Championship


Nomination process:

A total of at most twenty athletes (each of men and women athletes) will make the nomination list (the number will only be increased under extenuating circumstances, on discussion of the IAU Executive Council).

The top three (3) runners (men and women) at the major IAU competitions (MIAUCs) which includes 100km World and/or Continental Championships, 24 Hour World and/or Continental Championships, Trail World Championships and the 50km World Championships will automatically get nominated to the list.

In addition to the above nominees, any athlete who has achieved a World’s Best Performance (WBP) will also make the list.

The remaining spots on the nomination list will be open for recommendations to the general audience. Only runners running IAU Labelled events will be taken into consideration. Please send your nominations via email for available spots no later than February 14th 2019 to:

The nominees receiving the most nominations will fill the spots. Once the nominees have been compiled, they can be moved on to, the voting stage of this process.
