Election results of the IAU Executive Council and Area Representatives for 2021-2025
Following early announcement and communications on May 22nd the IAU Congress took place. Due to current pandemic situation for the first time it was held as virtual meeting with over 60 participants. After the congress the 2021 election of the IAU Executive Council and Area Representatives for 2021-2025 period took place. The voting process was done online in a period of 5 consecutive days. The voting was done in line with the IAU Constitution and each ballot remained open for 24h time frame.
IAU President
There was only one candidate for IAU President and Nadeem Khan (CAN) was declared IAU President during congress.
IAU Vice-President
There were 3 candidates for the position of IAU Vice-President. Robert Boyce (AUS) received an absolute majority in the first round and therefore was declared elected as the IAU Vice-President.
IAU General Secretary
There was only one candidate for the role of IAU General Secretary, therefore Hilary Walker (GBR) was declared IAU General Secretary during congress.
IAU Directors
There were 12 candidates for the position of IAU Directors (4 positions). Diana Amza (ROM) received an absolute majority in the first round and therefore was declared elected as IAU Director.
To fulfill the remaining 3 position second round of voting was required. In this instance Jacek Bedkowski (POL), Paco Rico (ESP) and Hilmy Aboud Said (COM) received the 3 highest number of votes and therefore were declared elected as the IAU Directors.
IAU Area representatives
There are four IAU Area Representatives position that has to be fulfilled for regions: Americas, Africa, Asia & Oceania and Europe.
There was only one candidate for the Americas Representative and Arturo Fabian Campanini Lopez (ARG) was declared Americas Representative in Congress.
There was only one candidate for the Africa Representative and Solomon Ogba (NGR) was declared Africa Representative in Congress.
Asia & Oceania Representative
There were 2 candidates for the position of Asia & Oceania Representative. Nagaraj Adiga (IND) received an absolute majority in the first round and therefore was declared elected as Asia & Oceania Representative.
Europe Representative
There were 3 candidates for the position of Europe Representative. On the first round none of the candidates received an absolute majority therefore second round was required. Gregorio Zucchinali (ITA) received the highest number of votes and therefore was declared elected as Europe Representative.
The IAU Election Team would like to use this opportunity to thank the Member Federations for taking part in the voting process maintaining a high turnout throughout the election. On average 89% of the registered voters took part in the elections, thank you for your commitment.
